Injecting insulin for the first time
I'll be honest, it was a bit of a mountain out of a molehill situation..
It’s really common to have people tell you that they could never inject themselves, which is a sentiment I fully appreciate because I can also remember thinking this before I was diagnosed. The concept of poking yourself deliberately with something sharp is very counterintuitive! Most of us to some extent actively try and avoid such things.
However, it’s also amazing how resilient we are as people, and how quickly we can adapt to new normals. Given the choice between a longer healthy life or rapid health degradation and hospitalisation and the big sleep, you’d be amazed what you can learn to do!
Injecting insulin isn’t fun, and there are days I really struggle to do it. But I stand by my description, that it’s rather like being in control of a tiny life saving mosquito, it can sting a little but at least it doesn’t end up itchy!
